Leavenworth, Washington
Things To Do
Adventure in every direction — from Bavarian beer halls to alpine wilderness
Hiking & Wilderness
Leavenworth is surrounded by world-class hiking — from easy river walks to the legendary Enchantments wilderness.

The Enchantments
One of the most spectacular wilderness areas in the Pacific Northwest — crystal-clear alpine lakes, granite peaks, and mountain goats above 7,000 feet. Permit required; apply in the annual lottery.
Icicle Canyon Trails
The Icicle Road outside of town leads to dozens of trailheads ranging from flat family-friendly walks along the Icicle Creek to demanding climbs toward Snow Lakes and Colchuck Lake.
Tumwater Canyon
The scenic canyon between Leavenworth and Stevens Pass is gorgeous year-round — spectacular fall foliage in October, wildflowers in spring, and dramatic river scenery all summer.
Christmas Lighting Festival
Three weekends in December — one of Washington's most beloved holiday traditions
Each December weekend, Leavenworth transforms into a magical winter wonderland. At dusk on Friday and Saturday, the entire village switches on its lights in a grand ceremony led by the "Lighting Man" — a local official who throws the switch while the crowd counts down.
500,000+ lights illuminate every roofline, tree, and lamppost. A Glühwein (mulled wine) market sets up in the main plaza, carolers in period dress perform on street corners, and Santa arrives by horse-drawn sleigh.
Planning tip: Book lodging 3–6 months in advance for December weekends. Friday and Saturday are the peak evenings for the light ceremony. Sunday is more relaxed but still beautiful.

Wine Tasting
Washington's wine country begins in Leavenworth's backyard

Leavenworth sits at the edge of the Wenatchee Valley AVA, one of Washington's most productive wine regions. Several tasting rooms operate right on Front Street — a perfect afternoon activity between exploring the village and sitting down for dinner.
Look for crisp local Rieslings that pair beautifully with German food, as well as Gewürztraminer, Grüner Veltliner, and reds from the warmer Columbia Valley. The German wine varieties thrive in this continental climate.
Day trips to the Wenatchee wine trail and Chelan wine country (about an hour east) are popular and worth it for serious wine lovers.
Wenatchee River Rafting
Class III–IV whitewater right outside town
Whitewater Rafting
The Wenatchee River is one of Washington's premier whitewater runs — Class III–IV rapids through a stunning canyon just minutes from the village. Multiple outfitters offer guided half-day and full-day trips (May–July peak season).

Flatwater Kayaking
The calmer sections of the Wenatchee near town are perfect for kayaks and SUPs. Rentals are available in Leavenworth, and the scenery — mountains, pine forests, and open sky — is spectacular.
Fly Fishing
Icicle Creek and the upper Wenatchee River offer excellent fly fishing for steelhead and trout. Several local guides specialize in Cascade mountain streams and can take you to spots tourists don't find on their own.
Winter Sports
Snow transforms Leavenworth into a whole new kind of magical
Leavenworth Ski Hill
Leavenworth's own small ski area is perfect for beginners and families — runs, a tubing area, and a full rental shop. The Bavarian backdrop makes it uniquely picturesque.
Mission Ridge (45 min)
The area's premier ski mountain is just 45 minutes away near Wenatchee — 2,000+ acres of challenging terrain, dry Cascade powder, and significantly fewer crowds than the mega-resorts.
Stevens Pass (35 min)
Stevens Pass on Highway 2 is a full-service ski area with 1,125 acres and big vertical — popular with Seattle day-trippers but still a fantastic mountain with excellent snowfall.
